Gary Rice

Gary was born in 1939 in a small fishing village in Rivers Inlet on the central coast of British Columbia. He is a member of the Coast Salish Nation, and was raised as a commercial fisherman and logger. After injuries forced him our of the manual trades in the mid-70s, he began to seriously investigate the traditional arts of his native ancestors. Woodcarving has been his occupation since. He finds a great deal of satisfaction in carrying on the traditions of his ancestors, and is a patient and dedicated carver. Gary is adept at various carving forms including masks, ceremonial rattles, bowls, paddles, and totem poles.
